First, get your base sorted. We all know how to make homemade pizza with store bought dough, but consider this quick and easy recipe to make your own. The kids will get a real sense of achievement from telling others they know how to make pizza from scratch, with their very own homemade pizza dough.
Before you start looking at your homemade pizza toppings, you need a sauce. This can be just tomato puree, a tin of chopped tomatoes, or a homemade pizza sauce. If your child is not a fan of tomatoes, consider a barbecue sauce or even thousand island dressing as a tasty alternative.
Now you can let your creativity run riot. You may have your own ideas for easy homemade pizza recipes – after all, you know what the children like best.
But if you’re looking for inspiration, here are five great pizza topping recipes, certain to produce a yummy homemade pizza with real flavour.
Garlic prawn and chorizo
In a bowl, mix together 12 peeled prawns with a tablespoon of chopped fresh coriander, a tablespoon of olive oil and half a clove of crushed garlic. Top your pizza with the mixture and add one thinly sliced chorizo sausage and 80g fresh ricotta cheese. Bake in the oven at 200C for approx. 15-20 minutes.
Take one cup of cherry tomatoes, a medium carrot, a medium yellow pepper, a cup of broccoli florets, half a red onion and half a cup of feta cheese crumbles. Chop the vegetables and shred the carrot, then sprinkle your pizza with the vegetables and drizzle some olive oil over the top. Sprinkle over some feta cheese. Place in the top of a pre-heated oven and increase the temperature to 220C, allowing to cook for 10-15 minutes. Watch carefully, taking out when browned and perfect – before they go burned and crispy.
Potato and Bacon
Take one red Rooster potato and cut into wafer thin slices. Chop two scallions/spring onions. Grate around 8 ounces of Gruyere cheese. Cut two strips of uncooked bacon into half inch pieces. Arrange evenly on your pizza base, and bake in the oven at 200C for around 15-20 minutes until the crust is golden brown.
Chilli cheese hotdog
For this recipe you could spread sweet chilli sauce on your pizza base, instead of a tomato sauce, depending on your taste. Add grated cheddar cheese until it covers the base, and thinly sliced hot dogs with chopped onions and fresh parsley. Then bake at 200C for 15-20 minutes.
Take a bowl and mix 10oz of diced cooked grilled chicken, with 2 tablespoons of barbecue sauce. Spread barbecue sauce on your pizza base and top with smoked mozzarella cheese. Place the chicken mix on top, and add chopped red onion – and jalapenos if you’re brave enough – and then more mozzarella cheese. Bake at 200C for 15-20 minutes.
