Open a Book and Begin an Adventure
Books have a magical ability to transport us anywhere.
One moment you can be exploring a jungle, and the next you might be sailing with pirates, travelling through space or solving a mystery.
Stories have entertained, educated and inspired people for thousands of years.
We're looking forward to celebrating stories and books at our summer camps with our Book Quest Weekly Theme from 10th to 14th Aug. Time to let your imaginations fly!
Let's celebrate the incredible world of books.
Fun Fact #1: Stories Existed Long Before Books
Before books were invented, stories were shared by word of mouth.
People gathered around fires and told tales to family and friends.
These stories helped preserve history, traditions and lessons for future generations.
Many famous legends began this way.
Considered to the the world's oldest written story, “Epic of Gilgamesh”, was a poem derived from sources that date back to approximately 2100 BCE!
Fun Fact #2: The First Books Were Written by Hand
Imagine copying an entire book without a computer or printer.
For hundreds of years, books were carefully handwritten by scribes.
Creating a single book could take months or even years.
Because they were so valuable, many books were treated like treasures.
Fun Fact #3: Reading Is Great Exercise for Your Brain
When you read, your brain works hard.
Reading helps improve:
Vocabulary
Memory
Concentration
Creativity
Communication skills
It's like a workout for your imagination.
Fun Fact #4: Libraries Can Hold Millions of Books
Some libraries are so large they contain millions of books.
These collections preserve knowledge, stories and history from around the world.
Libraries are one of the few places where anyone can explore endless adventures for free.
The world's biggest library (holding the most collections) is The US Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., housing over 178 million items.
Fun Fact #5: Authors Find Inspiration Everywhere
Writers often get ideas from everyday life.
A conversation, a holiday, a dream or even a pet can inspire a story.
Many authors keep notebooks nearby to record ideas whenever inspiration strikes.
Fun Fact #6: The World's Longest Novel Has Millions of Words
Some books are surprisingly long.
In fact, the longest novels ever written contain millions of words.
The longest book in a single volume is considered to be Mark Leach's experimental novel Marienbad My Love. With a mind-blowing 17.8 million words spread across 10,000 pages!
Fortunately, most children's books are much shorter and easier to enjoy in one sitting!
Fun Fact #7: Reading Before Bed Can Help You Relax
Many people enjoy reading before bedtime.
A good story can help children unwind, reduce screen time and prepare for a restful night's sleep.
That's one reason bedtime stories remain such a cherished family tradition.
