Making a family exercise routine can transform the health of you and your children.
Of course, family exercise ideas for a workout with kids range from the simple to the structured.
But the most important thing is that you’re leading by example. Your children seeing you taking part makes them happy and could feed an exercise bug that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
Here are seven starters for a family exercise routine – that’s one a day if you’re up for it.
Is there a cycle path or empty car park nearby? Get out on your bikes, scooters, rollerblades or skateboards for a whiz around. You’ll have so much fun, you’ll forget you’re exercising.
Set up three indoor “hotspots” – one with a safe step, one with a hula hoop, and one with clear floor for a quickfire family exercise routine. Set everybody up at a station, set your phone timer for 30 seconds and get going.
The kid at the step has to step up and down, whoever had the hoop’s got to keep it going and it’s time for some serious star jump action in the clear space. When 30 seconds are up, swap around.
You can alternate the exercises with a sideways step onto and across the step, balancing on one leg inside the hula hoop, and froggy jumps (jumping forwards and backward from a squat position).
Blow away those hump day blues with a walk on the wild side. You don’t even need exercise clothes – just whatever’s weather appropriate.
So head into the woods or off to the park – just make sure you’re walking fast enough to get a little out of puff.
The more often you get out and about, the further you’ll get and the better you’ll feel. It’s also a great chance to talk about your day as there’s nothing electronic to distract your kids.
This is where it gets competitive – so make sure everyone’s stretched and warmed up before you get to the tough stuff.
Pick five exercises – we’d go for the plank, lunges, quick sprints, star jumps and the wall sit. You’re looking to plank and roman chair for 30 seconds and do 10 reps of each of the other exercises.
Now, let’s see who can do the most sets. Not tough enough? Add a new exercise to the mix every week until it is.
It’s the end of the school week – let’s celebrate. Close the curtains, dig out the disco ball and get the tunes on. This most cunning of family exercise ideas means you can workout with kids who don’t realise they’re getting fit!
It doesn’t matter what gets your children dancing – just that they do it. So whether it’s the Paw Patrol theme tune, the soundtrack for The Greatest Showman, or Abba Gold, crank up the volume and shake your thang.
Time to pluck that trusty ball from the back of the cupboard, whether it’s for tennis, basketball, football or rugby. Head outside where there’s plenty of space and no traffic – then get those bodies moving. This is great practice for the outdoor summer activities your kids may want to take part in at Barracudas summer camp.
Score a goal, bat a ball, run and pass or shoot some hoops. Just move, move, move! If it’s wet outside, make a splash at the swimming baths – one of those family exercise ideas that’s always a winner. Remember Barracudas summer camp has a Swim School for your little ones.
It’s as important to be flexible as it is to be muscular. So why not try out a little yoga. Start with something simple like the Tree Pose if you’re going to workout with kids.
Stand on one leg, place the sole of the other foot above the inside of your knee, and raise your hands above your head until they touch, palms together. Hold the pose and concentrate on your breathing.
Yoga also strengthens the core, improves balance and helps you relax. You’ll find plenty of child-friendly poses on YouTube. It’s great for kids.
We hope these ideas help you and your family get moving and increase fitness levels. We'll be giving them a go to get fit for summer!
