It’s Real Bread Week, which is an annual celebration on supporting your local bakery or making your own bread instead. So why not scrap buying bread in your weekly shop, and make your own bread from scratch.
It is commonly thought that bread is hard to make and that you need special ovens to make it, but it really is that simple, you can even get your kids involved. Try giving these simple, tasty recipes a try.
Simple Bread Recipe
This bread dough recipe is perfect for those who just want a quick and simple bake. Firstly you will need to add 3 cups of bread flour, 1 packet of quick action yeast, 1 tablespoon of sugar and a pinch of salt into a bowl and mix thoroughly. Make a well into the middle and add 2 tablespoons of vegetable or sunflower oil and 1 cup of warm water.
Stir until it all comes together, then move the mixture onto a floured surface and knead for 5 - 10 minutes.
Once it is kneaded and smooth, break the mixture up into smaller pieces and decorate how you wish. Once decorated leave the bread in a warm space for about an hour or until it doubles in size.
After an hour, place the bread into a pre-heated oven on 180C and bake for 15 – 20 mins.
If your child is gluten free, then this recipe will be perfect for you to bake together.
In a bowl, add 1 cup of warm milk (can be nut milk, fresh coconut milk, goat or cow’s milk), ¼ cup of cane sugar and 2 ¼ spoons of yeast. Mix together and let the mixture sit for 10 minutes.
In a different bowl, combine 2 ½ cups of gluten free all-purpose flour and 1 tablespoon of sea salt. Once blended, add both mixtures together and blend with a mixer on low for 30 seconds.
Add in ¼ cup of butter and 2 large eggs and blend with a mixer on low for 30 seconds and then beat the batter until it becomes smooth.
Cover the bowl with a tea towel and place the dough in a warm place for about an hour. Once it has risen, place the mixture onto a greased baking tray or bread pan. Cover again and let the bread rise for a further 20 – 30 minutes in a warm place.
Finally, place the bread into a preheated oven on 180C for 40-50 minutes.
Who knew you could bake bread without yeast?! And it’s a perfect recipe for children as you don’t need to wait for the yeast to rise!
Firstly, you will need to add 2 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon of baking soda and a pinch of salt into a mixing bowl and stir thoroughly. Then you will need to add a cup of yogurt and 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the mixture and combine together to form kneadable dough.
Place your dough on a floured surface and knead it thoroughly. Once kneaded make characters using golf ball sized pieces of dough.
Finally, wet the surface of the dough and place in the oven until it is golden brown.
