Parents 'should encourage kids to try new activities'

Parents need to encourage their kids to try new activities, rather than stay cooped up indoors, one expert has suggested.

Writing for the Daily Mirror, Dr Miriam Stoppard said children who play sports not only benefit physically, but also learn valuable lessons about working as a team.

She remarked: "Encourage them to try out activities and sports at school and with local groups until they find something they're really keen on."

Dr Stoppard added hobbies like trampolining are a good way to let youngsters exercise while having fun and it can be done in the safety of a back garden.

The columnist also explained there are a range of activities that help kids to learn new skills including abseiling, quad biking, and rock climbing.

Researchers from Cambridge and Southampton University recently revealed youngsters who take part in vigorous activities are more likely to have stronger hip bones, which could prevent osteoporosis in the future.
