Swimming pool 'might encourage water activities for children'

As part of the Building Schools for the Future scheme, one school has received funds to provide better swimming activities for children.

Huntcliff School received £1.2 million in order to refurbish its pool, which will now be open to members of the wider community for the first time, the Scunthorpe Telegraph reports.

Headteacher Sue Bond said: "We've maintained the current pool at great cost … and really value it as part of the curriculum and our pupils do well at GCSE PE because [of] swimming."

As other establishments around Kirton have had to close their pools, Ms Bond explained that it will be beneficial for the area to have such a modern facility.

Young people have been encouraged to try new activities by Sir Liam Donaldson, who recently published the 2009 annual report On The State of Public Health, in which he advised children to create a lifelong habit out of physical activity.
