Summary: Patented on March 5th 1963, the hula hoop still proves popular.

The hula hoop has been highlighted as a children's activity that has remained popular after nearly 50 years.
Celebrating its 47th birthday on March 5th this year, the simple toy has lasted the test of time to become a much-loved childhood item, Tonic reported.
Hula hoops can be traced as far back as the ancient Greeks, the article stated, who used large rings of metal, bamboo, wood and vines around their waists to exercise.
Along with the Frisbee, the fad became an American hit under the production of Wham-O in the late 50s and early 60s, the news provider explained.
"Blasting calories and toning muscles, often by using heavier hoops, is proving to be an excellent way to get fit while having fun and feeling like a kid again," it was asserted.
According to the Staten Island Advance, celebrities including Michelle Obama and Beyonce enjoy the activity and the paper added that the form of playful exercise is becoming cool again.
