Brown Owl activity leader praised

The rewards of keeping children active have been highlighted by one of the nominees for a Community Champions award.

Now 63, Mary Gooding first joined the Guides in 1957 when she was just ten and has contributed to the group's activities ever since, the Derby Telegraph revealed.

"Guides and the other groups are just something I've always been involved in … It's really great to see young children come out of their shells and make friends," Ms Gooding told the paper after being nominated for its award.

She became a Brown Owl leader of the historic girls' activity club and has been responsible for taking her Brownies on countless excursions and activities over her years of work.

From Breadsall in Derbyshire, Ms Gooding was nominated by her husband Ian and will attend a ceremony on May 16th with 13 other nominees from the area for the community award.

The Guides was formed in 1910 by Agnes Baden-Powell after her brother Robert founded the Scouts for boys a few years earlier.
