Dozens of ice rinks have popped up around the country in recent weeks, providing an ideal activity for those who want soak up some festive spirit and burn off those mince pies.

There are several skating areas in and around London, including Somerset House and the Natural History Museum.

Families can also skate against the impressive backdrop of London Tower, which is opening its rink to the public until January 1oth 2009.

Elsewhere, one place that is sure to prove a hit with the kids this Christmas is Hyde Park's Winter Wonderland, where visitors will find dozens of rides and sparkling attractions.

Highlights include a snow ball bungee dome, giant ice monster and an observation wheel with heated gondolas.
